We often donate portrait sessions to local charities. This family had won their session by bidding on it through a silent auction. They wanted to try something different for their session. Most of our portrait session are on the beach but I was up for the challenge. We met at the base of the Memorial and decided to start there and work our way up. What a wonderful and historic place for a session and the view from the top is gorgeous! If you are going to book your session at this location there are some things you need to know.
The hours they are open doesn’t always work well with the lighting. Scheduling this location is better in the fall and winter when the sun goes down early.
You have to work around the other tourists (another reason to do this shoot off season).
There is a fee to enter the park.

We had so much fun with this busy couple, their twins and their two beautiful daughters. The photo shoot was at Coquina beach in Nags Head. This is one of my favorite places to hold family beach portraits. This beach is gorgeous, it has bathrooms and showers, and in this case the wildlife comes to greet you. There was a young buck that was curious as to what we were doing.
It has been a pleasure photographing this sweet family over the years. We photographed Johnna and Travis beach wedding in 2010 in Kill Devil Hills and have had the honor of photographing their family over several visits to the Outer Banks. The week of their most recent session had some crazy weather and we had to reschedule. Fortunately, we were able to do a gorgeous morning session in the town of Manteo on Roanoke Island. There are so many gorgeous areas on the Outer Banks that photographers love to take pictures. If you have had many sessions on the beach and want a change of scenery Manteo is perfect. The timing for shooting here is very important. Manteo can get very busy. Check with your photographer to find out the best time.
I had so much fun shooting photos of this family. The photo session took place in Nags Head close to the Nags Head Fishing Pier. It was quite windy that day but everyone was more than happy to have the Outer Banks beachy wind blown look. They just wanted the images to celebrate this amazing couples anniversary and a little wind was not going to stop them.
This family has a special place in our hearts. We were able to be a part of their amazing wedding day and their family portraits! We had a family photo session scheduled for Mother’s Day weekend but the beach was too windy and moist for pictures. They were so excited about the session and decided to do the session with a location change instead of rescheduling. We were able to go to the park on Barnes St. in Nags Head. We decided to hit the Nags Head Woods trail. We were wind shadowed there and were able to get some wonderful family portraits. They made sure to bring some props to play with to capture some more candid, fun and natural images. Our session ended with a bit of rain before we could make it to the play ground. Thankfully I brought an umbrella. That allowed us to get a couple extra shots in before we left the park. We will always do our best to work with your family and find an alternative location if the weather does not cooperate.
