Coquina Beach Portraits

Many of our family portrait sessions are shot at Coquina Beach. Coquina Beach is located south of Whalebone Junction, Nags Head and north of the Marc asnight Bridge (AKA: Bonner Bridge or Oregon Inlet Bridge). The entrance to Coquina Beach (same side as the ocean) is directly across from Bodie Island Lighthouse.

Bodie Island Spelling:

Southern Beaches: (Drive north)

  • Hatteras – 51.7 miles – 1 hour and 10 minutes

To find the entrance to Coquina Beach with a GPS, you can try to enter one of the following:

  • A. Coquina Beach
  • B. 35°49’45.7″N 75°33’28.5″W
  • C. 35.829370, -75.557928
  • D. Bodie Island Lighthouse (The Coquina Beach access is right across from the Bodie Island Lighthouse.

Directions to Coquina Beach coming from the North:

Coquina Beach is located south of Nags Head. To get to Coquina Beach from the northern Outer Banks, you will need to travel south on NC 12 entering either at Whalebone Junction or Old Oregon Inlet Road.  Those staying in South Nags Head will enter NC 12 at the southernmost part of Old Oregon Inlet Road. and then take a left (south) towards Coquina Beach. The entrance to Coquina Beach is shortly before the Bodie Island Lighthouse and is directly across from the road that takes you to the Bodie Island Lighthouse. The entrance is approximately 6.2 miles south of Whalehead Junction (10 minutes) and 1.2 miles south of the most southern part of Old Oregon Inlet Road. (1 minute). If you cross the long bridge over to Hatteras Island, you went too far.

Directions to Coquina Beach coming from the South:

Coquina Beach is located north of Hatteras Island. To get to Coquina Beach from the southern Outer Banks you need to travel north and will want to cross the Marc Basnight Bridge (AKA: Bonner Bridge or Oregon Inlet Bridge) Once you have crossed the bridge, the entrance to Coquina Beach is approximately 2.5 miles and takes about 3 minutes. You will see and pass the Bodie Island Light House on the left as you travel. The entrance to Coquina Beach is shortly after passing the Bodie Island Lighthouse and is directly across from the road that takes you to the Bodie Island Lighthouse. If you get to Whalebone Junction, you went too far.

Entering Coquina Beach:

1. When you get to Coquina Beach,
towards the ocean into the Coquina Beach entrance.
(Left if coming from the north and right if coming from the south)

2. Once you have entered the Coquina Beach access,
you will need to drive towards the “Bath House R.V. And Bus Parking sign

3. You will then wish to park and walk onto the deck.

4. Look for the “Welcome to Coquina Beach sign.

5. Now look towards the ocean and follow the walkway to the beach.

6. Your photographer will meet you at the end of the walkway on the beach.
Most photographers know us, so feel free to ask any of them to
point out the Outer Banks Productions staff.

(We usually have a camera or 2 hanging around our neck.)
